Less than 20 years ago, exosomes were regarded as cell waste products, but today they are seen as having multiple and varied functions, from disposing of unwanted molecules to intercellular communication. It is still early days for the exosome research field but progress is being made in exosome applications such as liquid biopsy, diagnostics, and development of vaccines and therapies. Despite the optimistic outlook, some technical challenges remain.
