Hydrogen peroxide is a reactive oxygen species, produced as a byproduct of various metabolic processes, particularly those involving the reduction of oxygen. Hydrogen peroxide assays usually involve the addition of H2O2-reactive probes, to produce colorimetric, fluorometric, or luminescent signals for detection. Example reactants include the chromogens ammonium molybdate or Amplex™ Red, and the fluorescent probe ADHP. Hydrogen Peroxide assays are used in a variety of applications, including studying pathways involving oxidative stress and antioxidant defense, screening for potential antioxidant compounds, studying antibacterial properties, and studying enzymes that produce or degrade H2O2.
