The Caco-2 cell line, originally derived from colorectal adenocarcinoma, comprises cells that are used as a model for human intestinal epithelium. The cell line, also known as Cancer coli-2, have been widely used in biomedical studies, including cell invasion, viral transfection, and uptake and transport of food and drugs. Caco-2 cells exhibit microscopic heterogeneity, containing cells with slightly different properties. The cells can differentiate and polarize to resemble small intestine enterocytes, expressing tight junctions, microvilli, and various characteristic enzymes and transporters. Recombinant Caco-2 cells with genetic modifications, such as constitutive genes or knockouts have also been generated for research use. Visit the cell supplier page for more information.
