Isoelectric focusing (IEF) systems separate proteins and peptides along a pH gradient based on isoelectric points (pI). By applying an electric field to the gradient, individual polypeptides will migrate until they reach a pH value that matches their pI. The resolving power of IEF is sensitive enough to distinguish even purified proteins, such as with protein isoforms and antibody variants. IEF is also one defining component in two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DGE). IEF systems are useful tools for labs regularly conducting applications in isoenzyme separation, heterogeneity studies, high-resolution protein profiling, forensics, and clinical analysis.
