
WST assay kits are designed to evaluate cell proliferation and viability through the use of water-soluble tetrazolium (WST) salts. The light red WST-1 (4-[3-(4-Iodophenyl)-2-(4-nitro-phenyl)-2H-5-tetrazolio]-1,3-benzene sulfonate) is converted to a dark red formazan by mitochondrial reductase enzymes along with the electron acceptor phenazine methosulfate. WST assay kits can be used to measure cell response to changing conditions, such as with the addition of inhibitors and pharmaceutical compounds. WST is advantageous as the reaction can occur outside cells, does not require a solubilization step, and is less toxic to cells.
