MTT Assay Kits

Kits and reagents are available that enable researchers to conduct the MTT cell viability assay, a biochemical test that evaluates the metabolic activity and viability of cells. The assay involves the conversion of the yellow tetrazolium dye MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) to an insoluble purple formazan. The enzymes responsible for the reaction are NAD(P)H-dependent cellular oxidoreductases, which are only active in viable cells. The absorbance of the colored solution can be quantified using a spectrophotometer and will be directly proportional to the concentration of formazan. The darker the color, the greater the number of viable cells present. In addition to cell viability, MTT assays can be used to measure cell proliferation and evaluate cytotoxicity.
