Hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) columns are is used in the separation of polar compounds. HILIC utilizes a polar stationary phase and a mobile phase that is a mixture of water and a less polar organic solvent such as acetonitrile. Hydrophilic partitioning plays the largest role in the mechanism of retention for this method, with other interactions such as ion-exchange, hydrogen bonding, and dipole-dipole contributing to a lesser extent. HILIC is considered a complementary technique to normal and reverse-phase chromatography. Its advantages include enhanced detection sensitivity when used with mass spectrometry, and higher flow rates due to the low viscosity of the mobile phase. HILIC stationary phases can be divided into three different groups: neutral, charged, and zwitterionic phases. Browse various HILIC columns below and visit the supplier page for more details.
