Protein G is a high-affinity immunoglobulin-binding protein first identified in the Streptococcus bacterium. This cell surface protein binds to the Fab and Fc region of all subclasses of IgG antibodies. It also contains an albumin binding site, which is often removed in recombinant forms of protein G. As compared to IgA, Protein G has a greater affinity for IgG subclasses, as well as for certain the IgG of certain species, such as sheep and goat. Antibody purification reagents that utilize Protein G come in forms such as agarose beads, magnetic beads, or sepharose beads.
