Basal Media

Basal Media The basal medium is intended to maintain the survival of cells in vitro in a manner that mimics the ideal physiological environment in vivo. Ideal basal media formulations contain chemically defined components that fulfill optimal conditions and concentrations for pH, amino acids, glucose, CO2, and various salts and ions. Some commonly used reagents in mammalian culture include DMEM, F-12, MEM, RPMI, DMEM/F12, and IMDM. Basal media typically lack protein supplementation and, depending on the cultured cell type, may require additives such as fetal bovine serum or a serum alternative. Visit the media supplier page for more details on the exact formulation.
