The most common insect expression vector is baculovirus, a recombinant rod-shaped virus containing a double-stranded circular DNA genome that will include the DNA fragment or gene of interest. The baculovirus expression vector system (BEVS) enables the expression of recombinant proteins within insect cell lines, such as those derived from Lepidopterans. However, some baculoviral vectors are capable of gene delivery into mammalian cell lines as well. The viral promoter uses the host protein synthesis mechanisms to replicate the gene of interest, allowing the inclusion of eukaryotic post-translational modifications.
