Ubiquitin is a small protein of 76 amino acid residues with a mass of about 8.6 kilodaltons. In humans, four variants of ubiquitin are encoded by the following genes: UBA52 and RPS27A both encode a single copy of ubiquitin fused to the ribosomal proteins; UBB and UBC are genes encoding polyubiquitin precursor proteins. Ubiquitinated proteins with attached ubiquitin units have altered functions and are marked for degradation.
