GC / MS Systems

GC / MS systems (also known as gas chromatography–mass spectrometry systems or GCMS systems) utilize a powerful combined technique that gives a higher level of substance identification of volatile chemicals than can be achieved by either system individually. The ability of MS to distinguish between closely related compounds overcomes coelution issues common to GC, resulting in both qualitative and quantitative identification of known and unknown compounds.

GC-MS is a valuable addition to the forensics, environmental, pharmaceutical, and chemical lab, ranging from simpler entry-level systems to those optimized for complex research, natural gas analysis, or forensic toxicology. GC-MS mass analyzer options include:

     • Single quadrupole
     • Tandem quadrupole
     • Triple quadrupole
     • Ion trap
     • TOF (time of flight)
     • High resolution TOFMS

Software is an important purchasing consideration, since it can simplify compound identification and result in a higher-quality analysis. Before making a final choice, compare measurement accuracy, reproducibility, and scan speed (systems can reach 20,000 u/sec). Sensitivity can be tricky to assess, however. Note the method used to measure S/N to be sure you’re comparing apples to apples.
