Western Blot Supplies

The Western blot is a commonly used technique in the lab to detect and measure specific proteins from a complex sample. Various Western blot supplies are available to ensure that the experiment runs smoothly. During protein electrophoresis, protein ladders need to be loaded alongside the sample to determine the size of each protein band. Electrotransfer (or electroblotting) facilitates the transfer of proteins from gel to a solid matrix such as membrane sheets of nitrocellulose, PVDF, or nylon. For wet transfers, the gel and membrane are sandwiched between sheets of filter paper, immersed in transfer buffer, and run in a tank-style blotter device. In a semi-dry protein transfer, the transfer sandwich is placed horizontally between two plate electrodes. For imaging and visualization, films and filters are used, while background quenching sheets help to improve signal-to-noise ratios.
