Macrophages are phagocytic white blood cells responsible for engulfing pathogens, and cellular debris. They arise from differentiated monocytes in tissues, developing larger cell bodies and more organelles. They can be activated by cytokines and endotoxins, upon which they become more effective in destroying pathogens and tumor cells. Cell surface markers for macrophage isolation include CD14 and CD68.
