Spectrophotometers are standard laboratory instruments that analyze biological samples using light, using measurement modes such as absorbance, reflectance, transmittance, and fluorescence. Spectrophotometers can vary depending on the type of measurement. UV-Vis spectrophotometers measure the ultraviolet to visible regions of the light spectrum; these instruments generally accommodate wavelengths ranging from 190 to 900 nm. These can also exist as single-beam or double-beam spectrophotometers. UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometers can reach the near-infrared range at wavelengths of 2600 to 3300 nm. Fluorescence and luminescence spectrophotometers can measure the emission of fluorescent and luminescent light, respectively. Small volume spectrophotometers, which can analyze microliter amount of samples, are ideal for nucleic acid or protein quantification.
