Hyaluronidase ELISA kits are assays designed to detect hyaluronidase, a family of five enzymes that catalyze the breakdown of hyaluronic acid. There are five functional hyaluronidases found in humans, namely HYAL1, HYAL2, HYAL3, HYAL4, and HYAL5. HYAL5 is also known as PH-20 hyaluronidase, which is encoded by the SPAM1 gene. These enzymes reduce the high viscosity of hyaluronic acid and are therefore used to promote the diffusion of subcutaneously injected substances for edema reduction and for the treatment of vitreous hemorrhage. They are also used to increase the absorption of drugs by tissues. Hyaluronidase can be found in mammalian spermatozoa and lysosomes and in the venom of snakes and other reptiles.
