Nitrotyrosine ELISA kits are assays designed to detect nitrotyrosine, a product of tyrosine nitration. It is produced by reactive nitrogen species like peroxynitrite and nitrogen dioxide. Peroxynitrite, which is formed from superoxide, mediates tyrosine nitration reactions on proteins, which results in the inactivation of certain antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase and catalase. Nitrotyrosine is therefore used as a marker of cell damage, inflammation and nitric oxide production.
