Cholesterol ELISA kits are assays designed to detect the molecule cholesterol or enzymes involved in its metabolism. These enzymes include cholesterol-25-hydroxylase (CH25H), cholesterol esterase, 11β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (HSD11B1) and lectin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT). CH25H is an oxidoreductase that catalyses the formation of 25-hydroxycholesterol, which shows antiviral activity. HSD11B1 reduces cortisone to the hormone cortisol, which can activate glucocorticoid receptors. LCAT converts free cholesterol to an ester, which is then used for the synthesis of high-density lipoproteins.
