Tryptase ELISA kits are assays designed to detect the serine protease enzyme tryptase. Found in mast cells, they are secreted during mast cell degranulation. It is a tetramer which has two major forms – α and β tryptase. Pro-β tryptase can be used as an indicator of mast cell number while β-tryptase can measure mast cell activation. They stimulate the synthesis of type I collagen and the proliferation of many cells, including epithelial, fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells.
