Herpes ELISA kits are assays designed to detect the herpes simplex virus (HSV) or antibodies produced against it. Herpes simplex is an enveloped, double-stranded DNA virus. There are two types, HSV-1 and HSV-2, both of which are contagious in humans. HSV-1 produces cold sores and HSV-2 causes genital herpes. They are neuroinvasive viruses and can persist latently within neurons. They can also lead to encephalitis and eye infections such as conjunctivitis and retinitis. Immunocompromised patients infected with HSV may develop pulmonary complications. HSV has been implicated in the development of Alzheimer’s disease and is being explored as an anti-cancer agent and transneuronal tracer.
