Endotoxin ELISA kits are assays designed to detect the complex lipopolysaccharides (LPS) known as endotoxins. They are a type of pyrogen that can be found in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. Endotoxins are composed of three parts – lipid A, ‘O’ antigen and a core oligosaccharide. They are released into circulation when a microbial cell is disturbed, and can cause septic shock, hypotension or nausea. Endotoxins can activate the complement system, leukocytes and kinins.
