Leishmania ELISA kits are assays designed to detect protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania or, alternatively, antibodies produced against them. Spread by Phlebotomus and Lutzomyia sandflies, these trypanosomes are the causative agents of leishmaniasis. Leishmaniasis occurs in three types, as visceral, cutaneous, or mucocutaneous. Leishmania species replicate within a vertebrate host and exist in two forms–amastigote and promastigote–during their life cycle. L. donovani and L. tropica are the most common species.
