Functionally, this protein is reported to be a heme-dependent dioxygenase that catalyzes the oxidative cleavage of the L-tryptophan (L-Trp) pyrrole ring and converts L-tryptophan to N-formyl-L-kynurenine. The canonical protein structure is reported to have an amino acid length of 406 residues, a mass of 47.9 kDa, and is a member of the Tryptophan 2,3-dioxygenase protein family. The TDO2 gene has been associated with the disease, Hypertryptophanemia.
