Anti-SMCT antibodies are used in antigen-specific immunodetection in biological samples. The target SMCT is a known alias name of the protein solute carrier family 5 member 8, encoded by the SLC5A8 gene in humans. This 610-amino acid residue protein is known to be involved in the apoptotic pathway and the transport of ions, among other biological processes. It is localized to the cell membrane of the cell and features glycosylated post-translational modifications. In terms of tissue expression, it is reported to be expressed in normal thyroid, localized at the apical pole of thyroid cells facing the colloid lumen, but expression profoundly decreased in thyroid carcinomas.
