Anti-Homeostatic iron regulator antibodies are directed against the protein encoded by the gene HFE in humans. The gene may also be known as HFE1, HH, HLA-H, MVCD7, hereditary hemochromatosis protein, and MHC class I-like protein HFE. Structurally, the protein is reported to be 40.1 kilodaltons in mass. Based on gene name, canine, porcine, monkey, mouse and rat orthologs may also be found.
