ALAS2 encodes the human gene, 5'-aminolevulinate synthase 2. It may also be known as: 5-aminolevulinate synthase, erythroid-specific, mitochondrial; ALAS-E; 5-aminolevulinic acid synthase 2; Delta-ALA synthase 2; Delta-aminolevulinate synthase 2; sideroblastic/hypochromic anemia; ALASE; ANH1; XLDPP; XLEPP; XLSA. The encoded protein is an enzyme with an amino acid length of 587 and a mass of 64.6 kDa. Other isoforms may exist. ALAS2 is a member of the Class-II pyridoxal-phosphate-dependent aminotransferase family. Homologs of this gene exist in other organisms, including: Mouse, Rat, Zebrafish, Frog.
