Anti-Desmin antibodies are used for the immunodetection of the protein encoded by the DES gene. In humans, the canonical protein has a reported length of 470 amino acid residues and a mass of 53.5 kDa. Its subcellular localization is in the cell membrane, nucleus, and cytoplasm. A member of the Intermediate filament protein family, it is known to be involved with cytoskeleton organization. Post-translational modifications have been described, including ubiquitination and phosphorylation. The gene encoding this protein is implicated in Myopathy. Other names for this target antigen include CSM1, CSM2, LGMD1D, LGMD1E, LGMD2R, and CDCD3. Gene orthologs have been identified in the mouse, rat, bovine, frog, chimpanzee and chicken species.
