Anti-CEA cell adhesion molecule 1 antibodies are used for the immunodetection of the protein encoded by the CEACAM1 gene. In humans, the canonical protein has a reported length of 526 amino acid residues and a mass of 57.6 kDa. Its subcellular localization is in the cytoplasmic vesicles and cell membrane. Alternative splicing is reported to yield 11 different isoforms for this protein. It is reported to be expressed in columnar epithelial cells of the colon. A member of the CEA protein family, it is known to be involved with angiogenesis and blood vessel development. Post-translational modifications have been described, including phosphorylation and glycosylation. Other names for this target antigen include BGP1, BGPI, carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 1, CD66a antigen, and BGP. Gene orthologs have been identified in the mouse and chimpanzee species.
