Anti-MUC1 antibodies are used in the immunodetection of the protein mucin 1, cell surface associated. In humans, the canonical protein has a reported length of 1255 amino acid residues and a mass of 122.1 kDa. Its subcellular localization is in the cell membrane. Up to 17 different isoforms have been reported for this protein. It is noted to be expressed on the apical surface of epithelial cells, especially of airway passages, breast and uterus. MUC1 is known to be involved with DNA damage pathways and the regulation of apoptosis. Post-translational modifications have been described, including O-glycosylation, N-glycosylation, palmitoylation, protein cleavage and phosphorylation.
The MUC1 marker can be used to identify Germinative Epithelial Cells Or Sebocytes, Perineurial Cells, and Perineural Cells.* Synonyms for this target antigen include ADMCKD1, ADTKD2, CA 15-3, CD227, Ca15-3, EMA, H23AG, and ADMCKD. MUC1 gene orthologs have been reported in the mouse, rat, bovine, frog and chimpanzee species.
