I work extensively with the cell wall hydrolases (enzymes) of bacteria. To check the enzymatic activity, I have to solubilize the intact cell wall of bacteria using mutanolysin. To examine the specific site of action on the cell wall, the resultant mutanolysin-digested cell wall fragments are used as substrates for cell wall hydrolases in vitro assays.
