Microplates, also known as microtiter plates, are rectangular multi-well plates used in a variety of assays from ELISA to PCR. Industry standard, 96-well plates are designed for all common instruments and can be used for applications such as sample collection, compound preparation, combinatorial chemistry, high throughput screening, nucleic acid purification, bacterial culture growth, and plate replication. Plates rows are typically labeled with numbers and letters; a notch in the upper right corner determines correct plate orientation. Plates are available in polypropylene or polystyrene, sterile or nonsterile formats; round or flat bottom wells, and a variety of volumes. The color of plate will affect florescence and background signal. Consider the compatibility of plate and platform before purchasing as some microplates are designed for specific equipment.
