Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of zinc-dependent endopeptidases that degrade extracellular matrix components including collagen, gelatin, elastin, and fibronectin. An MMP assay generally follows one of two general approaches depending on the research question. Universal MMP activity kits use a broadly cleavable fluorogenic substrate that most family members can process after activation with an organomercurial compound such as APMA, providing a general readout of total MMP-like proteolytic activity in a sample, with fluorescence typically read around Ex/Em 490/525 nm.
