Description
Interstitial collagenase, also referred to as Matrix Metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1), is encoded by the MMP1 gene in rabbits. This enzyme cleaves type I, II, and III collagens at a specific site within the helical domain and is also capable of cleaving type VII and X collagens. It plays a critical role in the reconstruction of the extracellular matrix. It plays a role in wound healing by facilitating the breakdown of collagen and other ECM components. MMP1 is involved in the invasion and metastasis of tumor cells by degrading the ECM surrounding tumors. MMP1 also contributes to cartilage degradation in arthritic conditions
