Urea

Urea, also called carbamide, is a nitrogenous organic compound with the molecular formula CH4N2O, possessing two amino groups joined by a carbonyl. It is colourless, odourless, and highly soluble in water. In the body, urea is formed from ammonia via the urea cycle in the liver and is the main nitrogenous excretory product in mammals. It is also the final product of protein metabolism in humans. Urea can be used in the lab to increase the solubility of hydrophobic molecules and denature or alter protein structure. Molecular grade urea can be used to prepare denaturing polyacrylamide gels, such as those used in nuclease protection assays.
