Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are self-renewing, multipotent cells that give rise to the various lineages of blood cells. HSCs may resemble lymphocytes morphologically, but cell surface markers are used to identify and isolate HSCs from a heterogeneous population. They are found in adult bone marrows, umbilical cord blood, as well as peripheral blood. Ready-to-use HSC isolation kits are available that can separate the desired cells by removing unwanted cells (negative selection) or by binding key cellular markers.
