Functionally, this protein is known to be involved in DNA damage response; activates kinases ATM, SMC1A and PRKDC by modulating their phosphorylation status following ionizing radiation (IR) stress. The canonical protein structure is reported to have an amino acid sequence of 821 residues and a mass of 88.1 kDa. It is known to be localized in the nucleus and cytoplasm and is ubiquitously expressed across many tissue types. As many as 3 protein isoforms have been reported. The protein has been noted to be post-translationally ubiquitinated. The BRAT1 gene has been associated with the disease, Rigidity and multifocal seizure syndrome. Other alias names for this target include HEAT repeat-containing protein C7orf27, and BRCA1-associated protein required for ATM activation protein 1.
