Anti-ST8 alpha-N-acetylneuraminate alpha-2,8-sialyltransferase 1 antibodies are protein reagents that detect specific antigens. The ST8 alpha-N-acetylneuraminate alpha-2,8-sialyltransferase 1 antigen is another term for the human protein ST8 alpha-N-acetyl-neuraminide alpha-2,8-sialyltransferase 1, encoded by the ST8SIA1 gene. The protein is known to catalyze the addition of sialic acid in alpha 2,8-linkage to the sialic acid moiety of the ganglioside GM3 to form ganglioside GD3; gangliosides are a subfamily of complex glycosphinglolipds that contain one or more residues of sialic acid. Canonically, it has an amino acid length of 356 residues and a mass of 40.5 kilodaltons. Its subcellular localization is in the Golgi and it is reported to be highly expressed in melanoma cell lines, adult and fetal brain and to a lesser extent in adult and fetal lung. The ST8 alpha-N-acetylneuraminate alpha-2,8-sialyltransferase 1 protein is a member of the Glycosyltransferase 29 protein family.
