We utilize Qiagen RNeasy Micro Kit to do most of our RNA extractions. Originally we had lysed lymphocytes using a 27g syringe. To obtain better yield and quality we decided to invest in Qiashredders. While we originally hesitated because of the additional cost the subsequent increase in RNA yield and quality made Qiashredders the best option for use with lymphocytes. Adding this product as part of the Qiagen RNeasy kits can speed up processing time without complicating the experiment.

When using Qiagen RNA isolation kits, cells are suspended in lysis buffer and then shredded. When using a Qiashredder, simply pipette cells in lysate into a Qiashredder placed in a collection tube and centrifuge for 2 min. Use one Qiashredder per sample.
Best for use with small cell numbers or samples that have low RNA yeild.
Retrieved RNA is typically of higher quality and quantity than RNA isolated from cells lysed in other ways (like through a fine-tip needle). Best improvement in results can be seen when using small cell numbers or cells with low RNA yield.
