We count cells to set up experiments with a consistent number of input cells and to express the resulting data accurately. An automated cell counter makes this a quick, painless, reproducible process. This unit features a built-in thermal printer.

Protocol Overview

A single cell suspension is loaded into a disposable counting slide and inserted into the instrument for counting. The unit autofocuses and generates a cell count. It can measure viability if trypan blue staining is selected in the protocol.

Results Summary

The Luna-II compares favorably to the Countess II (Thermo Fisher), another compact automated cell counter with a built-in touch screen. Pros: The Luna-II allows you to select whether you're using a stain or not and to correct for dilution factors (see photo). Countess II annoyingly assumes 1:1 dilution with trypan blue every time. The Luna-II uses slightly less expensive slides than the Countess II. The Luna-II can be optioned with a built-in thermal printer. Watching it print a little data receipt puts a smile on my face (it's also useful for taping into your lab notebook). Cons: The Luna-II is quite a bit lighter, less than half the weight of Countess II; this does cheapen the feel. The company is based in Korea so service could be an issue (or not). The Luna-II is definitely slower to autofocus and count than the Countess II. Both units produce consistent counts that are similar to one another. Neither unit calculates seeding volumes.
