Multiplexing is a powerful technique that simultaneously measures the levels of multiple analytes in a single sample, potentially saving researchers precious sample and time. Multiplex immunoassays are available in bead-based formats where capture antibodies are attached to a bead and in planar formats where antibodies are bound to a solid surface such as a microplate or glass slide. In bead–based formats, each bead fluoresces at a unique wavelength and is bound with antibodies to measure a single analyte (e.g. VEGF). A small sample volume is mixed with a set of beads to determine the levels of several antigens (e.g. multiple cytokines or growth factors) in that sample.
