A study conducted by the Alliance for Science reveals a significant shift in public sentiment toward gene editing. The research, which analyzed data from January 2018 to December 2022, demonstrates that gene editing consistently receives higher favorability ratings than genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in both social and traditional English-language media. The findings provide valuable insights for the scientific community.

According to the study published in GM Crops & Food, gene editing exhibits a consistently higher favorability rating compared to GMOs. This disparity is attributed to the relative novelty of gene editing as an issue, with limited negative publicity compared to the decades-long campaign against GMOs. Mark Lynas, the study's lead author, suggests that this positive trend in favorability indicates a promising future for gene editing, potentially contributing to global food security and environmental sustainability.

The research team also highlights the possibility that lessons were learned from the early adoption of GMOs, leading to a more cautious approach in the deployment of gene editing. Lynas suggests that gene editing, which involves DNA alterations that could occur naturally, may be perceived as less "scary" than transgenic techniques involving DNA transfer between unrelated species.

Surprisingly, the study finds that social media coverage of gene editing has been predominantly positive in recent years, even as it reaches larger audiences. This contradicts the common perception that social media tends to be negative and polarizing. Lynas suggests that social media has been a positive platform for discussions on gene editing.

While the study indicates a positive trend in public acceptance of gene editing, the authors caution that sustained downward trends in favorability may pose concerns. They emphasize the importance of monitoring changing sentiment over time and maintaining ongoing communication and engagement with the public to ensure a better understanding of these technologies.
