Stat3 (Signal transducers and activators of transcription) is a transcription factor and a member of the Stats protein family. The Stats family regulates gene expression in response to a large number of extracellular signaling polypeptides including cytokines, interferons, and growth factors. After phosphorylation by JAK tyrosine kinases, Stats enters the nucleus to regulate transcription of many different genes. There are two major isoforms of STAT3; the long form is known as STAT3alpha(93KDa) and the short form is known as STAT3 beta (84KDa). Stat3 is upregulated in many cancers including glioblastoma, head and neck, prostate, and breast cancer. Stat3 is also critical for leptin signaling and its mutation leads to obesity in mice
