Description

The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is regarded as a model plant of the Solanaceae family which includes several economically important vegetable crops, ornamentals and medicinal plants. Tomato has served as a model member of this family largely because of its enriched cytogenetic, genetic, as well as physical, maps (1). Recently, a number of tomato resources have been developed in parallel with the ongoing tomato genome sequencing project. Laboratory-grown miniature tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) cultivar Micro-Tom has attracted attention as a host for functional genomics research (2). Transgenic tomato plants with improved abiotic stress tolerance, disease resistance and insect resistance, have been developed. Attempts are made to develop tomato as a bioreactor for various pharmaceutical proteins. However, control of fruit quality and ripening remains an active and challenging area of research and is paving the way to improve not only tomato, but also other solanaceous crops (3). The light-harvesting complex (LHC) consists of chlorophyll a-b binding proteins and functions as a light receptor by capturing and delivering excitation energy to photosystems with which it is closely associated. The N-terminus of the protein extends into the stroma where it is involved with adhesion of granal membranes and post-translational modifications which mediate the distribution of excitation energy between photosystems I and II.
