bFGF (FGF-2) is a member of a family of seven peptides that are potent regulators of cell proliferation, differentiation and function. bFGF stimulates the proliferation of cells of mesodermal origin and many cells of endodermal, ectodermal and neuroectodermal origin. bFGF also induces neuron differentiation, survival and regeneration and stimulates astrocyte migration. bFGF may also be involved in the production of a variety of pathological conditions arising from excessive cell proliferation
