Neprilysin (NEP) is a functional neutral endopeptidase of the type that has previously been called enkephalinase or atriopeptidase. NEP mRNA levels are significantly decreased in both Alzheimer's disease and amyloid plaques individuals. This decreased MME expression correlates with amyloid-beta deposition but not with degeneration and dementia
