Description

Sterol O-acyltransferase 1 (SOAT1/ACAT1) is a key enzyme for cholesteryl ester biosynthesis. SOAT1 is an allosteric enzyme; it can utilize a variety of sterols (including oxysterols, plant sterols, etc.) as a substrate as well as an activator, with cholesterol being the best substrate and the best activator. The preferred fatty acyl-CoA as a substrate for ACAT1 is oleoyl-CoA. SOAT1 is responsible for the formation of foam cell in macrophages. SOAT1 is located mainly at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and is ubiquitously expressed in tissues and cells. SOAT1 is constitutively expressed and likely functions to maintain the intracellular balance of free and esterified cholesterol. SOAT1 is involved in the formation of atherosclerotic plaques, and was involved in regulating inflammation
