Vertebrates possess three small ubiquitin-like modifiers (SUMOs) that can be conjugated onto target proteins and alter protein function in diverse but still poorly characterized ways. SUMO3 expression system with a lower cost would likely be widely used for the production of other cytotoxic proteins including antimicrobial peptides.
