NEUROG3 (Neurogenin 3) is a Protein Coding gene. The protein encoded by this gene is a basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor involved in neurogenesis. The encoded protein likely acts as a heterodimer with another bHLH protein. Together with NKX2-2, it initiates transcriptional activation of NEUROD1. NEUROG3 plays a central role in the development of both pancreatic islets and enteroendocrine cells. Homozygous hypomorphic missense mutations in NEUROG3 have been recently associated with a rare form of congenital malabsorptive diarrhea secondary to enteroendocrine cell dysgenesis. NEUROG3 is essential for endocrine pancreas development in humans and that as little as 10% NEUROG3 is sufficient for the formation of pancreatic endocrine cells
