Tenascin C (TNC) is an extracellular matrix glycoprotein, expressed in the CNS during development, as well as in the setting of inflammation, fibrosis, and cancer, which operates as an activator of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). TNC consists of four distinct domains, including the tenascin assembly domain, epidermal growth factor-like repeats, fibronectin type III-like repeats, and the fibrinogen-like globe (FBG) domain. TNC plays an important role in cancer cell proliferation and migration and tumor invasion in various types of cancer. A high level of TNC as a potential biomarker of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) was significantly correlated with the poor prognosis for prostate cancer patients.
