Description
Human Gb3/CD77 synthase (alpha1, 4-galactosyltransferase, P(k) synthase), encoded by A4GALT gene, is known for synthesis of Gal(alpha1-4)Gal moiety in globotriaosylceramide (Gb3Cer, CD77, P(k) blood group antigen), a glycosphingolipid of the globo series. The Alpha 1, 4-Galactosyltransferase(P Blood Group), a type II membrane protein found in the Golgi, is also required for the synthesis of the bacterial verotoxins receptor. Among its related pathways are Glycosphingolipid biosynthesis-lacto and neolacto series and Metabolism. A4GALT is related to galactosyltransferase activity and lactosylceramide 4-alpha-galactosyltransferase activity. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene. An important paralog of this gene is A4GNT. A4GALT is associated with some diseases, including Blood Group, P1pk System and Caffey Disease
